A lot of backyards in the Twin Cities have the same problem - sloped or awkward spaces that just sit there doing nothing. No good place to set up a table, hang out, or actually enjoy the yard. That was the situation here in Eagan, and we came in with a plan to fix it the right way.

We installed a new paver patio right underneath the existing deck, which is actually one of the best uses of that often-ignored space. The paver pattern came out clean - a bordered field pattern with contrasting tones that gives it a finished, intentional look. It connects directly to the deck stairs, so moving between levels feels natural and easy.

The retaining walls were a big part of this job too. The yard had some grade changes that needed to be addressed, and the walls we built handle that while also adding visual structure to the space. Stacked block walls like these aren't just there to look good - they're doing real work to keep the soil where it belongs and protect the patio over time. We topped them off with a cap that ties into the overall color palette nicely.

Once the hardscape was set, we got into the landscaping details. Fresh crushed rock went in along the foundation and in the areas where grass wouldn't make sense. Sod went down in the open areas to get the yard growing right away. It pulls everything together so the finished space feels complete - not like a patio dropped into a construction zone.

That's really what a full-scope project like this is about. The patio, the walls, the rock, the sod - each piece matters on its own, but together they turn a backyard that wasn't being used into something the homeowner can actually enjoy.
