A lot of backyards in Minnesota have underused space beneath a deck - awkward to landscape, prone to erosion, and basically wasted square footage. That's exactly what we were working with here in Cottage Grove. The homeowner wanted something functional and clean. Something that could actually hold up through freeze-thaw cycles year after year.

What we ended up with is a large paver patio tucked right under that elevated deck. The field pavers are a light neutral tone, and we framed the whole surface with a darker charcoal border - it gives the patio a finished, intentional look without being flashy. That contrast between the two paver colors is a simple detail that makes a big difference.

The boulder wall running along the back edge of the patio is doing real work here. It's holding back the grade change behind it while also giving the space a natural, grounded feel. Natural boulders like these blend into a Minnesota yard in a way that manufactured block walls just don't. They're also incredibly durable - no cracking, no shifting, no painting required.

Pavers are one of the best long-term investments you can make in your outdoor space. Unlike poured concrete, individual pavers can be reset if the ground shifts, and they handle Minnesota winters without the cracking and heaving that slabs are notorious for. This patio is set up to look just as good ten years from now as it does today.

This kind of setup - a solid paver patio paired with a boulder wall - takes what was essentially dead space and turns it into a usable outdoor area. Whether it becomes a seating space, a covered retreat on rainy days, or just a clean transition point from the house to the yard, the bones are there to make it anything the homeowner wants.
