Old decks have a way of becoming more problem than they're worth. They rot, they shift, they need constant upkeep - and at a certain point, you're spending more money maintaining something that just isn't working for the space anymore. This homeowner in St. Paul knew it was time for something better.

We tore out an elevated deck and replaced it with a full paver patio. The goal was simple: give this backyard a clean, solid surface that's actually easy to use and easy to maintain. No more boards to replace, no more staining every few years. Just a durable patio that holds up through Minnesota winters and looks good doing it.

The pavers are laid in a herringbone pattern, which isn't just a nice visual touch - it's actually one of the strongest patterns you can use for interlocking pavers. It distributes weight and foot traffic more evenly across the surface, which helps the patio hold its shape over time. The curved front edge gives the layout a finished look that fits the backyard without feeling forced.

What we ended up with is a patio that runs right off the back door and opens up the entire yard. It's a genuinely usable space now - flat, stable ground-level access where before there were stairs and an aging elevated structure. That kind of change has a real impact on how a family actually uses their backyard day to day.

Paver patios are one of the most practical upgrades you can make to a home in this area. They're low maintenance, they handle freeze-thaw cycles well when installed correctly, and they add real value to the property. If your deck is starting to feel more like a liability than an asset, replacing it with a paver patio is worth a serious look.
